The University of Baguio School of Criminal Justice and Public Safety, under the leadership of the Dean, Dr. Charesma Grace K. Lud-ayen, successfully held its much-anticipated Martial Arts Day on April 12, 2025, at the UB Cardinals Gymnasium. This semester’s tradition, themed “Discipline and Defense: A Day of Martial Arts,” brought together Criminology and Forensic Science students for a day of spirited competition, cultural appreciation, and personal growth through the practice of ARNIS and JUDO.

This year’s event proudly featured ARNIS and JUDO, underscoring both the rich heritage of indigenous combat systems and the disciplined techniques of internationally recognized martial arts. Throughout the day, participants not only showcased their physical prowess but also embodied the fundamental values of martial arts—discipline, respect, and self-control.

This year’s celebration was made even more meaningful through the efforts of Ms. Cora M. Dogui-is and Mr. Norman B. Bustillo, whose guidance and dedication ensured the success of the event. Their commitment to promoting the values of martial arts inspired a celebration that highlighted not only physical skill, but also the deeper virtues of respect, perseverance, and honor.

A standout aspect of the event was the series of competitive matches across diverse weight categories, where student-athletes demonstrated exceptional talent, unwavering determination, and sportsmanship. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to all the podium finishers whose perseverance, skill, and commitment earned them well-deserved recognition.

Beyond the physical demonstrations, the event emphasized competencies pertinent to the field of criminal justice—including situational awareness, self-defense readiness, coordination, and mental focus. Through rigorous training and live demonstrations, students practiced applying these competencies in scenarios that mirror real-world situations and responsibilities.

Furthermore, Martial Arts Day nurtured relevant character development, promoting leadership, accountability, emotional regulation, and resilience. As future law enforcement officers, students reinforced their ethical foundation and commitment to service, embodying the values expected of protectors of justice.

More than a mere showcase of athletic ability, Discipline and Defense: A Day of Martial Arts continues to serve as a potent platform for cultivating character, leadership, and camaraderie—qualities essential to their future roles in criminal justice and public safety.
